Functional Electrical Stimulation
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a technique that uses low-energy electrical pulses to artificially generate body movements in individuals who have been affected by an injury to the central nervous system. More specifically, FES can be used to generate muscle contractions in otherwise paralysed or weakened limbs and is used to deliver therapies to retrain voluntary motor functions such as grasping, reaching and walking.
FES is used as a short-term intervention to help the central nervous system of the person to re-learn how to execute impaired functions, instead of making the person dependent on the technology for the rest of their life.
As registered prescribers, we can provide assessments and free trials for a number of FES solutions, such as the Bioness. People who have had a stroke or brain injury, or are living with conditions such as MS, or incomplete paralysis can experience drop foot that affects their walking ability.
