Functional abilities and fitness
Key to supporting someone with a spinal injury
Therapy Goals:
A spinal cord injury is a life changing event. Physiotherapy and fitness become essential features that enable an improved quality of life.
Jonny’s goals have evolved over time but there has always been a focus on maximising his functional ability, preventing secondary complications and developing an awareness of bespoke exercises that would improve his strength, co-ordination and range of movement.
Key achievements:
Working with Ann Pimm since 2009, a big move came once Jonny recognised how fitness could improve his quality of life and how essential it was in his rehabilitation.
Becoming very successful at car transfers meant that the world became more accessible again for him. Whilst weekly hydrotherapy sessions with Mike Neary, Exercise Rehabilitation Therapist has helped Jonny develop weight bearing that he takes into the physiotherapy gym.
Continued work on deep tissue mobilisation to prevent tethering and restriction of movement and pain ensures better comfort and muscle balance.
Determined to lead a fulfilled life, Jonny now runs his own business, competes in curling, is a Support Network Volunteer for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) and with Ann Pimm he set up the Accessible Festival, now in its 10th year, which is ‘an annual festival without compromise for adults and children with disabilities.’
